The team capped off a 22-practice fall camp with a 76-play scrimmage before shifting its focus to preparations for the Cinch Jeans Rocky Mountain Showdown.
Afterwards, McElwain reflected on how far his team has come since taking over on Dec. 13, 2011.
"I am proud to be their coach," said McElwain. "We are getting it; the foundation is being built. We need to go play somebody and find out what exactly we are and that will tell."
The scrimmage paralleled a game day atmosphere, similar to the one the Rams will experience during the home-opener on Sept. 8th against North Dakota State, as the players and coaches arrived to the stadium on three buses.
From there the team dressed in the locker room and began a pre-game routine, with special teams the first to take the field. Kickers Keenan Adams and Jared Roberts alternated place-kicking from 35 yards out while Pete Kontodiakos and Hayden Hunt perfected their craft of punting.
After 10 minutes the rest of the team began their on-field routine, working position drills before a brief 11-on-11 walk-thru.
The team played a full quarter before breaking into a situational scrimmage, where they practiced two-minute drills and third-down situations.
The defense was led by pre-season All-Conference selection Shaquil Barrett. The junior registered eight tackles, including four sacks.
Jared Roberts began to separate himself from other kickers as he connected on all three of his field goal attempts.
As the team turns its attention to its first game under McElwain, the coach is admittedly enthusiastic for his first season.
"I am really excited," McElwain said. "There are no any apprehensions because you prepare. There should be nothing to be nervous about if you're prepared. I am going to be jumping up and down with them in the huddle, just not as high."

Emerging leader: After connecting on all three of his attempts at Thursday's scrimmage, Jared Roberts was singled out by McElwain as the kicker who has set himself apart in the place-kicking department.
"He is probably going to be our field goal guy," McElwain said. "Might not be our kickoff guy, Hayden Hunt has had a really good camp as well."
"I am really excited about that," said McElwain. "You heard the roar from their teammates (when announced in front of the team) and I think that speaks volumes."
The first-year head coach believes that giving walk-ons a fighting chance is part of the history of CSU.
"That is in the tradition with Coach (Sonny) Lubick and what he did with walk-ons in the past and understanding there is a chance," he said. "We take a good look at all of them."
Rocky Mountain Showdown student tickets: Officials with the Cinch Jeans Rocky Mountain Showdown between Colorado State and Colorado have extended the deadline for CSU students to take advantage of special ticket pricing for the Sept. 1 battle, including an exclusive giveaway for a CSU student.
