Lorenzo Neal This Weeks Honorary Captain

FRESNO, Calif. - Former Fresno State fullback Lorenzo Neal is returning to Bulldog Stadium this weekend to be the honorary team captain for the 'Dogs on Saturday in their 5 p.m. game against Colorado (CBS Sports Network.

Neal, one of the top 10 all-time leading rushers in program history, played at Fresno State from 1989-92. He ran for 2,405 yards in his career and was a first-team All-Big West selection in 1991 and a honorable mention All-America selection by Football News in 1992.

In Neal's first season on the field in 1990 he started nine games and ran for nine touchdowns and 580 yards, including back-to-back 100-yard games against New Mexico State and Cal State Fullerton. Neal was a second-team All-Big West selection that year.

In 1991, Neal helped lead the Bulldogs to the Big West Conference Championship, a berth in the Cal Bowl XI and a 10-2 overall record. As a fullback, he not only ran for 837 yards and eight touchdowns, but he also blocked for Ron Rivers (989 yards/5 TDs) and Anthony Daigle (586 yards/11 TDs) as the Bulldogs finished the season with 3,501 yards rushing - a program record that still stands to this day.

Rivers went on to become Fresno State's all-time leading rusher with 3,473 yards and Daigle set Fresno State's all-time rushing touchdown record at 35 behind the blocks of Neal. Rivers' record still stands, although current Bulldog tailback Robbie Rouse is 79 yards away from breaking that mark.

As a senior in 1992 Neal rushed for 988 yards and 10 touchdowns, giving him 2,405 career rushing yards with 27 touchdowns.

He went on to be drafted in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. Neal played 16 seasons in the NFL, was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time All-Pro. Considered one of the best blocking fullbacks in NFL history, Neal blocked for 1,000-plus yard running backs 11 straight seasons from 1997-07.
