Athlete of the Week

Korey Jones

The conference portion of the season is coming ahead with Nevada on Oct. 6. What are your personal and team expectations for Mountain West play?

My personal expectations and team expectations are the same as they were coming into the season we are fully focused on winning a conference championship.

Your father played football at CSU and you grew up in Fort Collins. Growing up did you ever envision yourself playing at Wyoming?

No, I did not ever see myself playing for Wyoming.

How did your time at Garden City Community College prepare you for Division I football and the adjustment from high school to college?

The program and my coaches at GCCC prepared me for Division 1 football by treating me like I was in Division 1 program already. I was held to a high standard and had high expectations and was expected to handle things a certain way and it has transferred over to Division 1.

You've earned the trust of your teammates as a defensive captain. How does this trust affect your play on the field?

My role as a captain doesn't have any effect on my play on the field. Captain or not, I would still be who I am and play how I play. There is just as much pressure on me as there is on everyone else on the team to perform well on Saturdays.

Is there a story behind your jersey number?

I was 28 in high school, then when I got to junior college our conference only allowed 12 spots on the roster to be filled by out-of-state players, so all of us out-of-state guys that made the team chose to pick numbers 1 through 12. I chose 5 because I liked the way it looked.

If you could be anyone else for a day, who would it be?

The Hulk

Where is one place in the world you would like to visit?

Africa

What are your career aspirations?

I hope to coach someday

When did you start playing football? Besides linebacker, have you played other positions?

I have been playing football since I was 6 years old. This is only my fourth year playing linebacker. I grew up playing running back and safety. I also had some time at defensive end when I got to high school.

What have you enjoyed most about your time in Laramie?

I've enjoyed the people I have met and been able to build relationships with.
