Former Lobo Glover Quin Selected to Join United Way's "Team NFL"
Oct. 1, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNM Alumni Letterman and current Houston Texans starting safety Glover Quin has been selected to join United Way's "Team NFL" in its fight to address the increasing number of high school drop outs in America. Quin, who is working closely with United Way of Greater Houston, is responsible for a multitude of local activities to help rally volunteers who will tutor and mentor young people, helping them to succeed in school and graduate.
Quin will appear on local KHOU-TV Channel show “Great Day Houston” on Oct. 16 to encourage people to get involved and pledge with United Way’s “Team NFL” and “Team Quin.” He will also join hundreds of children, parents, and corporate volunteers for the “Readers Do Something About It” reading rally and book drive at Reliant Center on Nov. 3, which is designed to engage the community in reading, tutoring and mentoring local youth. Additionally, the campaign will feature radio, digital media, as well as 15 billboards that will engage the Houston community and encourage them to volunteer with “Team NFL.”
By 2014, Quin has been challenged to help recruit 3,000 volunteer pledges. Quin’s role kicked off in June when he joined the rest of the team in Washington D.C. for United Way’s national “Team NFL” Day of Action. To join Quin in helping cut the dropout rate in half by becoming a volunteer reader, tutor or mentor to students, Houston area fans should visit his United Way web page.
“It truly is an honor and a blessing to be in a position where I am able to give back to the community,” said Quin. “United Way has provided me an opportunity to encourage others to get involved and make a difference in the lives of the next generation.”
One million students drop out of high school each year in America. United Way aims to cut this number in half by 2018. In the Houston area alone, one in four children will not graduate from high school. Through partners like the National Football League, United Way will recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors by 2014.
