Two MW Players Named Semifinalists for 2012 Mackey Award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Nassau County Sports Commission announced on Monday that two Mountain West players were named semifinalists for the 2012 John Mackey Award, given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. Nevada senior Zach Sudfeld and San Diego State junior Gavin Escobar were among the eight tight ends to advance as semifinalists, making the Mountain West one of two FBS leagues (Pac-12) with multiple semifinalists for the 2012 Mackey Award.
A product of Modesto, Calif., Sudfeld was added to the Mackey Award midseason watch list. The sixth-year senior ranks third among Wolf Pack receivers this with 444 yards and six touchdowns off 37 receptions, averaging 12.0 yards per catch and 44.4 yard per game.
Escobar, who hails from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., is a candidate for the Mackey Award for the second straight season. The junior leads San Diego State in receiving with 35 catches for 483 yards and five touchdowns. Escobar is averaging 13.8 yards per reception and 43.9 yards per game.
Finalists for the 2012 John Mackey Award will be announced on Monday, Nov. 19. The award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2012 Mackey winner will be presented live on December 6, 2012 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show airing at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
