FRESNO, Calif. - The College Football Performance Awards announced on Monday that Fresno State safety Phillip Thomas will receive the 2012 CFPA Defensive Back Trophy, which will be presented to him at halftime of the Bulldog men's basketball game on Wednesday.
In addition to being honored as the top defensive back in the nation by the CFPA, Thomas was named to his fifth All-America team on Monday when ESPN.com selected him to its team.
Thomas has become the most decorated player of the 15 first-team All-Americans in school history. Other All-America teams yet to be announced are the Associated Press and Football Writers Association of American. If Thomas can grace those two teams, he will become just the second consensus All-American in school history. Quarterback Jackie Fellows was a consensus All-American in 1942.
The 2012 CFPA Defensive Back Trophy is a 22" optic crystal tower with 8" optic crystal football on top.
The goal of College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. All recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
Also of Note Monday: Redshirt freshman wide receiver Davante Adams was named to the 2012 College Football News All-Freshman Team. This is the third Freshman All-America team that Adams has been selected to.
