HONOLULU - Members of the Fresno State football team along with the spirit squads took time on Sunday to visit the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children in an effort to bring a little joy to the children during the holidays.

Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter, players Tyler Simonsen, Travis Harvey, Victor Dean, Josh Harper, Matt Akers and T.J. Thomas all walked the halls of the hospital visiting children and distributing gifts. Additionally, TimeOut and members of the Fresno State spirit squads were on hand bringing smiles to the faces of the children.

"It was fantastic. Our guys all week had educational experiences and to me this was another one," DeRuyter said of the visit. "It was a chance for our guys to give back to the community here at the Kapi'olani Medical Center.

"To see the kids' faces, the parents faces light up seeing TimeOut, the cheerleaders and even some of our players was great to have this experience and hopefully we were able to brighten a couple of their days."

The players volunteered for the trip to the hospital in between time preparing to face SMU in the 2012 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on Christmas Eve here in Honolulu.

"I think as a player, especially being a Bulldog, you always have to consider giving back not to just our community but to everywhere you go," wide receiver Victor Dean said. "Being out here in Hawai'i, it's real nice to bring a little bit of happiness to some of these kids that are going through a tough time."

Dean said he was able to relate to a lot of what the children at the hospital are currently going through. He spent a week in the hospital after breaking his leg on Nov. 3 in the game against Hawai'i.

"I think it's a real good experience being here because I was in the hospital and I know what it's like to have people visit you," Dean said. "It's a nice experience to come in and try to bring some smiles to these kids' faces during these tough times."
