WAIKOLOA, Hawaii—The TCU men’s golf team opened its spring schedule Wednesday with the first round of the Amer Ari Invitational at Waikoloa Kings’ Course. The Horned Frogs finished the day tied for 14th place in a challenging 20-team field.

Included among the tournament’s participants are 11 of the nation’s top-50 ranked programs according to the latest Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings and 16 of the country’s top-50 individual golfers. TCU's lineup combined to shoot a 3-over par score of 291, 20 strokes off the pace set by tournament leader Texas (-18; 270). The Longhorns, the nation's top-ranked team, hold a five-stroke lead on the entire field entering Round 2.

Junior Daniel Jennevret experienced a successful start to his spring season, posting a 3-under par opening round of 69. The score was good for a tie for 15th place and only three strokes behind the day’s three leaders, Patrick Grimes (Stanford), Cheng-Tsung Pan (Washington) and Pontus Widegren (UCLA), who sit at -6.

Jennevret, the nation’s No. 52 ranked golfer, carded four birdies and one bogey on his round and played the final 11 holes at -3. The Sweden native is looking to build off a strong fall campaign that saw him earn a pair of runner-up finishes in TCU’s four tournaments.

Senior Johan de Beer shot even-par 72 in his first round of the spring to finish the day in a tie for 54th place. He recorded three birdies and three bogeys Wednesday. Following de Beer on the leaderboard were junior Pontus Gad (+2; 74) and sophomore Johnny Antle (+4; 76), who are tied for 71st and 98th place, respectively. Freshman Julien Brun, the nation’s No. 13 ranked player, struggled in his first spring outing, firing a 5-over 77, and sits in a tie for 102nd place entering Round 2.

Two other Frogs are also competing this week as individuals, including sophomore Ian Phillips who fired a 2-under 70 to grab a share of 26th place entering Thursday. Senior Eduardo Perez is tied for 98th place after posting a 4-over par score of 76.

Competition at the Amer Ari Invitational continues Thursday with first groups teeing off at 7:30 a.m. at Waikoloa Kings’ Course.
