TCU Climbs Leaderboard in Hawaii

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii—The TCU men’s golf squad posted the low team score of the day during Round 2 of the 22nd annual Amer Ari Invitational to move up the leaderboard Thursday at Waikoloa Kings’ Course. The Horned Frogs climbed to eighth place after entering the day tied for 14th.

TCU’s golfers combined to shoot a 5-under par score of 283, two strokes better than any of field’s other 20 teams. The Frogs own an overall two-day score of -2, 17 strokes behind top-ranked Texas, which continues to lead the field at -19. Eleven of the nation’s top-50 rated programs are included among the tournament’s field according to the latest Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings.

Senior Johan de Beer and freshman Julien Brun were TCU’s big movers on the individual leaderboard Thursday, as both carded 3-under totals of 69. Only 13 golfers shot sub-70 scores during Round 2 in a field that features 16 of the nation’s top-50 individuals.

De Beer recorded three birdies in addition to an eagle on hole No. 4 to offset a pair of bogeys, as he climbed into a tie for 21st place at -3 He entered the day tied for 54th following an opening-round 72. Brun posted a pair of birdies and an eagle of his own on hole No. 13 to move into a tie for 54th place. His effort helped offset a 5-over 77 in Round 1.

Junior Pontus Gad also finished in red figures Thursday with a 1-under 71 and is now tied for 45th place. Sophomore Johnny Antle, who is tied for 82nd at +6, concluded the TCU scoring with a 2-over 74. Junior Daniel Jennevret dropped in the standings alongside Gad into a tie for 45th place at +1 with a 4-over 76.

Sophomore Ian Phillips, who is playing this week as an individual, continued to hover near the top third of the leaderboard in a tie for 39th place at even par following a Thursday score of 74. Senior Eduardo Phillips, also competing as an individual, dropped into tied for 106th place (+12) after shooting an 8-over score of 80.

Competition at the Amer Ari Invitational wraps up Friday with the final round. First groups are scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. at Waikoloa Kings’ Course.
