KAHUKU, Hawaii - The No. 13 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 10-under-par 278 on Wednesday at the 36th Annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which is being played at Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course (par 72, 7218 yards).

California is the team leader after an 18-under 270 and leads the field by four shots. New Mexico is in second place at 14-under, followed by the Rebels, while SMU and Duke are both tied for fourth at 6-under.

Individually, Duke's Julian Suri leads by a shot at 7-under 65. There is a three-way tie for second at 6-under.

UNLV junior Kevin Penner led all UNLV players on Wednesday with a 5-under 67 and is tied for fifth, while sophomore Blake Biddle is also in the top 10 after a 4-under 68. Biddle is tied for seventh. Penner carded five birdies on the day, while Biddle had six birdies and two bogeys.

Rebel freshman Carl Jonson shot 1-under 71 and is tied for 22nd, senior Derek Ernst shot even-par 72 and is tied for 36th, and freshman Kurt Kitayama was at 6-over 78, tied for 80th.

The 18-team, 105-individual tournament will continue Thursday and conclude Friday with 18 holes each day.
