No. 12 Rebels In First At Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. ( - The No. 12 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 9-under-par 279 and was in first place after the first round of play on Saturday at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, which is being hosted by the University of Wyoming and played at the Classic Club (par 72, 7,305 yards). Play was suspended during the second round Saturday evening because of darkness.

The Rebels finished the first round one shot ahead of Auburn. The Tigers shot a first-round 8-under 280. Kent State was third at 6-under, followed by Saint Mary's at 4-under and Texas-Arlington at 3-under.

Auburn's Niclas Carlsson was the first-round individual leader at 6-under 66 and led the field by one shot. UNLV junior Kevin Penner was in a three-way tie for second place at 5-under 67.

Other Rebels: senior Derek Ernst was tied for sixth at 2-under 70, freshmen Carl Jonson and Kurt Kitayama were both tied for 12th at 1-under 71, and sophomore Blake Biddle was tied for 23rd at even-par 72. All Rebel players were at par or better during the first round.

The 54-hole tournament was originally scheduled for 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. There are 24 teams and 120 individuals. The second round will resume Sunday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m., with the third and final round to follow immediately afterward. No live internet scoring is available, but results will be posted on
