Brun Earns Title, de Beer Runner Up at John Hayt Collegiate
Feb. 28, 2012
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.—TCU freshman Julien Brun earned his second individual tournament championship of the season Tuesday during the final round of the 2012 John Hayt Collegiate Invitational held at historic Sawgrass Country Club. Senior teammate Johan de Beer placed runner-up.
The performances by the two Horned Frog frontrunners helped TCU finish in a tie for fifth place in the race for the team title with a three-day, 21-over-par score of 885. Arkansas rallied during the final round to take the overall crown at +8 after entering the day trailing tournament host UCF. The final placing marked TCU’s best-ever in five years playing at the tournament, which featured nine of the nation’s top-50 squads among the 15-team field.
Brun continued his brilliant freshman campaign, becoming only the fifth Frog, and the first freshman, to win top medalist honors twice in a single season by playing an even-par round of 72 on the final day. He recorded a birdie 3 on the par-4, 442-yard 17th hole to move to -5 and in front of de Beer, who also carded an even-par 72 while finishing at -4.
Brun added to an impressive individual resume that already included a victory in his first-ever collegiate tournament back in September at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate. He posted scores of par or better in each of the three days this week to run his total to 14 in 18 rounds this season. Brun also managed to claim his fourth top-5 placing in only six events this season.
De Beer’s performance marked one of the top efforts of his career, marking his second-best individual finish behind only the tournament title he claimed as a freshman at The Prestige at PGA West in 2008. He now has 10 top-5 career finishes.
Freshman Thomas Mantovanini, who did not count towards TCU’s team score while playing this week as an individual, was the third Frog finisher on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 36th place. He shot a 4-over 76 Tuesday to finish the week at +8. Junior Daniel Jennevret posted his top round of the week with a 1-over 73 while tying for 49th place at +11, while junior Pontus Gad and sophomore Johnny Antle tied for TCU’s final scoring spot of the day, as both carded 3-over rounds of 75. Gad finished tied for 72nd overall (+19), while Antle was 85th (+27).
Freshman Sarosh Adi, who like Mantovanini was playing as an individual, posted TCU’s top score in the final round with a 1-under 71 to boost him into a share for 69th place (+17).
TCU returns to action March 9-11 in Las Vegas, Nev., when it plays in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
