Weather A Factor On Day One

LAS VEGAS ( - Under rainy conditions that included a weather delay, the UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 11-over-par 299 on Friday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, which is being played at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards).

The prestigious tournament, which has a 15-team field, includes nine of the nation's top-10 teams according to the Golfstat rankings. The public is encouraged to attend the tournament and admission is free.

After the first 18 holes of play, top-ranked California is at 3-under 285, one shot ahead of second-place Stanford. Alabama is third at 1-over, followed by UCLA and New Mexico in a tie for fourth at 3-over. A total of eight shots separates the top eight teams in the standings. UNLV is in 13th place.

Individually, Stanford's Patrick Rodgers shot a 6-under 66 and has a two-shot advantage over Alabama's Cory Whitsett, who is at 4-under in second place. There is a two-way tie for third at 3-under.

UNLV was led by junior Blake Biddle's even-par 72. Biddle is tied for 12th after recording four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. Sophomore Carl Jonson is tied for 40th after a 3-over 75, freshman AJ McInerney and senior Kevin Penner are both tied for 51st after scores of 4-over 76, and sophomore Kurt Kitayama is in 76th place after a 9-over 81.

The Rebels also have four players competing as individuals: junior Nicholas Maruri and freshman Zane Thomas both shot 5-over 77 and are tied for 58th, while senior Arthur Kim was 12-over and sophomore David Flynn was 13-over.

A total of 81 individuals are competing in the tournament, which will continue on Saturday and conclude Sunday with 18 holes each day starting at 8 a.m.
