No. 11 Rebels One Shot Back At Home Tourney

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 11 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 1-under-par 287 on Friday and is just one shot back at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, which is being played at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards).

California is the team leader after a 2-under 286. Texas A&M follows the Rebels in third place at even-par, while UCLA is fourth at 3-over and Stanford, Texas and Alabama are in a three-way tie for fifth at 4-over.

Individually, Texas Tech's Logan McCracken raced out a two-shot lead with a round of 6-under 66. He had an eagle on the par-5, 577-yard 13th hole and also recorded six birdies with two bogeys. Texas A&M's Tyler Dunlap and Alabama's Bobby Wyatt are tied for second at 4-under.

UNLV junior Kevin Penner shot a 2-under 70 Friday and leads all Rebel players in a tie for sixth place. Sophomore Blake Biddle is also in the top 10 after a 1-under 71. Freshman Kurt Kitayama shot even-par and is in a tie for 19th, while senior Derek Ernst was 2-over and tied for 29th. Freshman Carl Jonson rounded out the lineup for UNLV and was 3-over in a tie for 40th. Two Rebels are competing as individuals: junior Arthur Kim shot 3-over, tied for 40th, and senior Colby Smith was 10-over, tied for 74th.

The 15-team, 78-individual tournament features 11 of the nation's top-25 teams according to the GolfStat rankings. The tournament will continue on Saturday and conclude Sunday with 18 holes each day starting at 8 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend the tournament and admission is free.
