Rebels 9-Over On Second Day At Southern Highlands

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a second-round 9-over-par 297 on Saturday during the second round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters and is tied for 11th at the event, which is being played at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards).

The prestigious tournament, which has a 15-team field, includes nine of the nation's top-10 teams according to the Golfstat rankings. The public is encouraged to attend the tournament and admission is free.

Top-ranked California shot a second-round 8-under 280 to increase its lead to 11 shots with a 36-hole total of 11-under 565. Stanford is in second at even-par, followed by Alabama in third at 1-over, New Mexico in fourth at 5-over and UCLA rounds out the top five at 6-over. The Rebels are at 20-over for the tournament.

Individually, Stanford's Patrick Rodgers shot a second-round 1-over 73, but maintained his two-shot lead at 5-under 139. New Mexico's James Erkenbeck and Alabama's Cory Whitsett are both tied for second at 3-under. There is a three-way tie for fourth at 2-under.

UNLV is led by Blake Biddle's 3-over 147. He is tied for 23rd after a second-round 3-over 75. Freshman AJ McInerney shot a 1-over on Saturday and is tied for 36th at 6-over 149. Sophomore Carl Jonson is tied for 54th at 8-over 152 after a second-round 5-over 77, sophomore Kurth Kitayama is tied for 61st at 9-over after a second-round even-par and senior Kevin Penner is tied for 69th at 11-over after a second-round 7-over.

The Rebels also have four players competing as individuals: junior Nicholas Maruri is tied for 48th at 7-over after a second-round 2-over, freshman Zane Thomas is tied for 61st at 9-over after a 4-over on Saturday, while senior Arthur Kim is 18-over for the tournament and sophomore David Flynn is 23-over.

A total of 81 individuals are competing in the tournament, which will conclude Sunday with 18 holes starting at 8 a.m.
