March 11, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 11 UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 5-over-par 293 on Sunday to capture the team title at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, which was played at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards). It marked the team's fifth win in seven events this season.
The Rebels finished the 54-hole event at 8-over 872 and won by a shot over California. The Bears shot a final-round 12-over 300 to finish at 9-over for the event. UCLA finished third at 18-over, followed by Texas A&M in fourth at 21-over and Stanford was fifth at 24-over.
Since the event was moved to Southern Highlands in 2002, UNLV has won the title outright five times and in 2010 tied for first with UCLA.
UNLV sophomore Blake Biddle won medalist honors for the first time in his career as he fired a 3-under 69 on Sunday to finish at 4-under 212 for the tournament. He finished two shots ahead of Texas A&M's Tyler Dunlap and UCLA's Pontus Widegren, who both tied for second at 2-under 214. Biddle's final round consisted of seven birdies and four bogeys.
"It was a tough day out there with the weather," UNLV head coach Dwaine Knight said. "It was windy, the greens were really tough and the course played extremely difficult. It was nice to battle like we did. We hung in there and Blake made a big putt on the last hole to win it for us, which was very exciting. I am really proud of the way the guys played."
Other Rebels: junior Kevin Penner shot 2-over 74 on Sunday and finished tied for 11th at 3-over 219, freshman Kurt Kitayama shot 1-over to finish in a tie for 15th at 5-over, senior Derek Ernst shot 5-over to finish tied for 33rd at 10-over, and freshman Carl Jonson shot 10-over and finished in a tie for 42nd at 11-over. Junior Arthur Kim (individual) finished tied for 63rd, while senior Colby Smith (individual) tied for 67th.
The 15-team, 78-individual tournament featured 11 of the nation's top-25 teams according to the GolfStat rankings. UNLV will be back in action March 16-17 at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
