No. 4 Rebels Third In Arizona After Two Rounds

TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 4 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 5-under -par 283 and a second-round 2-over 288 on Friday at the National Invitational Tournament, which is being played at Omni Tucson National Golf Club (par 72, 7,219 yards).

San Diego State holds the team lead after two round at 10-under 566, six shots head of second-place BYU. The Cougars are 4-over, followed by the Rebels in third place at 3-under. SMU is fourth at even par, while Memphis rounds out the top five at 3-over.

San Diego State's J.J. Spaun is the individual leader at 11-under 133 after rounds of 5-under 67 and 6-under 66. BYU's Zachary Blair is second at 10-under, one shot back.

Three UNLV golfers are in the top 11. Freshman Carl Jonson is tied for fourth at 3-under after a first-round 4-under 68 and a second-round 1-over 73. He had five birdies and a bogey in the first round and three birdies and four bogeys during the second round.

Junior Kevin Penner is tied for seventh at 2-under (72-70), while senior Derek Ernst is tied for 11th at even par (70-74). Freshman Kurt Kitayama is tied for 18th at 2-over (73-73) and sophomore Blake Biddle is tied for 32nd at 5-over (74-75). Junior Arthur Kim is playing as an individual and is tied for 27th at 4-over (78-70).

The tournament features 12 teams and 76 individuals, and will conclude with 18 holes on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. Live scoring is being provided by Golfstat with a link at UNLVRebels.com.
