AUSTIN, Texas—Senior Johan de Beer helped lead TCU to a third-place finish Saturday during the final round of play at the annual Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club. The 12-team field consisted of seven of the nation’s top-50 ranked squads.

TCU finished the tournament at +14 after combining for a final-round score of 293, moving up one position into third place while jumping No. 14 Texas A&M. Top-ranked Texas ran away from the field, posing a final score of -9, 16 strokes ahead of runner-up New Mexico (+7).

Senior Johan de Beer posted the 14th top-10 finish of his career while tying for 10th place at +1. The native of Pretoria, South Africa, fired a 3-over par 74 in Saturday’s final round and finished six strokes back of a three-man group that shared top medalist honors featuring Dylan Fritelli, Jordan Spieth and Julio Vargas, all from Texas (-5).

TCU’s key number on Saturday proved to be 74, as four of the five Frogs in competition each recorded the total during the final round. Freshman Julien Brun shot 74 to claim sole possession of 13th place at +3 overall for the weekend, while junior Daniel Jennevret also hit the number to climb into a share of 17th place. Sophomore Johnny Antle finished 47th place (+14) with a 74 of his own, his top round of the weekend.

The one Frog not to card a 74 in the final round, sophomore Ian Phillips, actually recorded TCU’s top score of the day. Phillips shot even-par 71 while tying for 26th place (+7), which marked his top finish in a tournament so far for as a Frog.

TCU continues its spring campaign next week when it travels to Lakeside, Calif., for the Barona Collegiate Cup. Competition at Barona Country Club begins Thursday before wrapping up Friday.
