Cowboy Golfers Open Don Puckette-Arizona National Invitational Tournament
March 16, 2013
TUCSON, Ariz. -
The University of Wyoming men's golf team played the first two rounds of the Don Puckette-Arizona National Invitational Tournament on Saturday, at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. Senior Clinton Boutelle paced the Cowboys finishing the day tied for 67th place of the 92-man field with a 36-hole score of 151 (+7). Boutelle carded a first round 76 (+4) and finished with a second round 75 (+3). In a field that features seven of the top 50 schools of the GolfWeek rankings, including two of the top 10 programs, the Cowboys finished the day in 16th place of the 16-team field with a two-round score of 614 (+38). Wyoming fired rounds of 305 (+17) and 309 (+21).
"I thought Clinton played pretty solid today, not great but solid," Wyoming Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "We are still a little rusty and it is tough to be competitive in a field as good as this when you are rusty. What is also hurting us is Kamrin Allen is out indefinitely with a hand injury. When you lose a guy that is 25 percent of our team scoring in the fall it is hard to score well. That being said we are still inconsistent right now, but it is still early in the spring season and I know we will recover."
Boutelle led the Cowboy scoring in the first two rounds and was followed by junior Eric Parish who fired rounds of 78 (+6) and 75 (+3) to finish tied for 72nd place with a two-round score of 153 (+9). Fellow junior Brent Baylon finished the day in 79th place with a total of 155 (+11). Baylon shot a first round 77 (+5) and finished with a second round 78 (+6). Junior Eddie Stewart shot the best first round of the day for the Pokes at 74 (+2) and closed the day with a 10-over 82 finishing tied for 83rd place with a final tally of 156 (+12). Playing as an individual, redshirt sophomore P.J. Thomas finished the day tied for 85th place with a score of 157 (+13). Thomas carded rounds of 80 (+8) and 77 (+5). Sophomore Jake Hedge rounded out the UW scoring shooting rounds of 78 (+6) and 81 (+9) to finish in 88th place with a total score of 159 (+15).
The Don Puckette Arizona-NIT is being played at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club. The course plays 7,094 yards and a par 72.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday with one 18-hole round beginning at 8 a.m. MT.
