De Beer Leads TCU in Opening Day at Barona Creek

March 22, 2012

LAKESIDE, Calif.—A strong opening-day performance by senior Johan de Beer on Thursday lifted TCU into fifth place entering the final day of competition at the Barona Collegiate Cup at Baron Creek Golf Club. De Beer enters the final day only one stroke back of the individual lead.

Round 1 action was completed Thursday afternoon before play was suspended midway through Round 2. Competition will resume Friday morning before being completed with the third and final round.

The Horned Frogs finished Round 1 in fourth place at -11, only six strokes back of tournament leader Kent State, but the squad has fallen off a bit in the second round. TCU, currently at -7 for the tournament, will enter Day 2 trailing the current leader, San Diego State (-23), by 16 strokes. The Frogs, ranked No. 35 nationally, currently lead one higher-ranked team in No. 8 Georgia Tech.

De Beer, who has turned a strong spring season so far into a top-100 national ranking entering the week, continued his solid play Thursday, posting a 7-under par opening round of 65 before finishing the day at -8. He sits in a three-man share of fourth place that is only one stroke behind a three-man group atop the leaderboard featuring Anders Engell (St. Mary’s), J.J. Spaun (San Diego State) and Taylor Pentrith (Kent State).

Sophomore Ian Phillips experienced a fantastic start to tournament, firing a 6-under 67 before finishing the day at -2 overall to grab a share of 18th place entering Day 2. The Round 1 performance marks his lowest score as a Frog.

Joining de Beer and Phllips in red figures in the opening round were junior Daniel Jennevret and freshman Julien Brun, who posted respective scores of 3-under 69 and 1-under 71. Jennevret enters Day 2 in a tie for 24th place (-1), while Brun has fallen to even for the tournament in a tie for 30th place.

Also contributing to TCU’s team total was freshman Thomas Mantovanini, who shot a 5-over 77 in the opening round and is tied for 72nd for the tournament at +6. Sophomore Johnny Antle, the other Frog eligible to count towards the team score, is in sole possession of 100th place (+13).

Two additional Frogs made the trip to Southern California to play as individuals in freshmen Jacob Gould and Greg Holmes, and both will enter the final day in a seven-way tie for 84th place at +9. Gould fired a 1-over 73 in the opening round thanks in part to a hole-in-one on the 260-yard, par 3 third hole. Holmes shot a 2-over 74 during Round 1.

TCU concludes competition at Barona Creek Golf Club on Friday. First groups are scheduled to begin what remains of Round 2 at 7:30 a.m. PDT.
