Brun Tops Leaderboard at Insperity ASU Invitational

March 31, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga.—Freshman Julien Brun played Saturday’s opening two rounds 11-under par while climbing to the top of the individual leaderboard of the Insperity Augusta State Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club. Senior Johan de Beer gave TCU two Horned Frogs in the top-10 entering Sunday’s final round, owning a share of ninth place.

The Frogs sit in fourth place among the 16-team field at -10, seven strokes behind co-leaders Texas and Augusta State. The tournament features nine teams ranked among the nation’s top-50. TCU, rated No. 35, currently leads five of those squads: No. 13 Clemson, No. 22 Oklahoma State, No. 27 Baylor, No. 40 SMU and No. 50 Lamar.

Brun roared to the top of the individual leaderboard with a pair of outstanding rounds Saturday. He opened the tournament with a 4-under 68 featuring six birdies and two bogeys before posting the score of the day in Round 2 with a 7-under 65 that matched the low total of his career. After opening the second round with a bogey 5, he finished with eight birdies in the final 14 holes, including five straight to conclude the round.

Brun will take a one-shot lead into Sunday over Augusta State’s Taylor Floyd, who combined to finish -10 Saturday on his home course. Included in the field are nine of the nation’s top-50 golfers, including five who are ranked ahead of Brun (No. 18). If Brun is able to hold on Sunday, it will give him three top-medalist honors this season, which would a new program single-season record.

Joining Brun in the top 10 is de Beer, who has finished among the top 10 in each of his last tournaments. After opening the day with a 1-under 71, de Beer fired a 3-under 69 to make up three spots on the leaderboard. The senior from Pretoria, South Africa, combined for seven birdies on the day to offset three bogeys.

Freshman Thomas Mantovanini also has experienced a very strong tournament so far, claiming a share of 20th place entering the final round at -2 overall. Mantovanini shot an even-par 72 in Round 1 to match the previous low round of his varsity career before later topping it with a 2-under 70 in the second 18.

Junior Daniel Jennevret (+9) and sophomore Ian Phillips (+10) are No. 74 and No. 75, respectively, as both Frogs struggled in the opening round before regrouping in the afternoon. Jennevret fired an 81 in the morning before shooting even par in Round 2. Phillips totaled a 79 in Round 1 and a 75 in Round 2.

TCU concludes play at the Insperity ASU Invitational Saturday. First groups are scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m. EDT.
