Fessler Leads 'Dogs in Day One

FRESNO, Calif. -- Senior Rufie Fessler took an early lead in the Winchester Classic on Friday, April 19 to sit in the top-10 of the 58-player field.

Fessler leads the Bulldogs with one-under, 71 to sit in a four-way tie for sixth place. Fessler made three birdies on the day to finish one stroke from a four-way tie for second place.

"Rufie played a solid round," head coach Mike Watney said.

The Fresno State men's golf finished day one in eighth place out of 11 teams.

As defending champions of the 2012 Winchester Classic, the Bulldogs fired 14-over par, 302 in round one of the 2013 Winchester Classic.

"I have confidence that the next two rounds will be much better," Watney said.

Co-hosted by UC Davis and Nevada, the three-day tournament is held at the Winchester Country Club in Meadow Vista, Calif.

UC Santa Barbara leads the tournament with one-under par, 287.

Playing as the Bulldogs sixth man, junior Daniel Russell trails Fessler by two strokes. Russell fired one-over par, 73 to sit in a tie for 13th place.

Freshman Troix Tonkham finished day one in a tie for 24th place at three-over par, 75.
