No. 4 Rebels Six Shots Back After First Day In Provo

PROVO, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 4 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 4-over-par 292 and a second-round even-par 288 on Friday at the PING Cougar Classic, which is being played at Riverside Country Club (par 72, 7,142 yards).
UNLV is in fourth place at 4-over 580 after 36 holes and trails first-place BYU by six shots. The Cougars are at 2-under 574 after rounds of 2-over 290 and 4-under 284. BYU's "B" team is one shot back at 1-under, followed by Colorado State in third at 2-over. Air Force rounds out the top five at 9-over. The tournament features nine teams and 51 individuals.
Mike Jurca, who is playing for BYU's "B" team leads the field by one shot at 5-under 139. Colorado State's Zahkai Brown and Southern Utah's Jeff Evans are both tied for second at 4-under. Jurca had rounds of 2-under 70 and 3-under 69, while Brown carded a 4-under 68 and an even-par 72 and Evans turned in a 5-under 67 and a 1-over 73.
Rebel junior Kevin Penner leads all UNLV players and is in a tie for fourth place at 3-under 141, two shots off the lead. Penner turned in an even-par 72 and a 3-under 69. During the second round, he made four birdies with a bogey.
Other Rebel individuals: sophomore Blake Biddle is tied for 12th at 2-over 146 (72-74), while senior Derek Ernst (73-75), and freshmen Carl Jonson (75-73) and Kurt Kitayama (76-72) are all tied for 20th at 4-over 148. Junior Arthur Kim, who is playing as an individual, is in 45th at 11-over 155 (78-77).
