Men's Golf In Third After Day One at MW Tourney
May 3, 2013
TUCSON, Ariz. - The San Diego State men's golf team sits in third place after shooting a collective 4-over 288 on Friday during the opening round of the 2013 Mountain West Championships at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club. With their performance, the two-time defending champion Aztecs are just one stroke behind second-place UNLV (+3) and six shots in back of front-runner New Mexico (-2) on the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course.
Individually, SDSU was led by sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who each fired an even-par 71 to end the day tied for fourth place in the field of 45 golfers. Schauffele was a model of steadiness throughout, posting 16 pars to go with one birdie and one bogey, while Michelini managed to overcome four bogeys with four birdies of his own, including the final two holes.
The tightly bunched leaderboard also includes the Aztec trio of senior Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England) and juniors James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.), who find themselves in a seven-player logjam for 11th place after each completed the first 18 holes at 2-over 73. Despite closing with a bogey, Holley also displayed his consistency with 14 pars, while Berry regrouped from a slow start, finishing with eight pars and a birdie after logging four bogeys on the front nine. Kaiser experienced nearly the opposite fate, however, recording three bogeys and a birdie on his final eight holes after remaining even through No. 10.
Just three players broke par on Friday, as New Mexico's Victor Perez grabbed the early lead with an opening-round 66, while teammate Garrett Green landed in the third spot at 1-under 70, three shots in back of second-place Kevin Penner of UNLV, who fired a 4-under 67.
The MW Championships resume with second-round action on Saturday, as SDSU is once again scheduled to tee off with New Mexico and UNLV, beginning at 8:40 a.m. PDT.
