Men's golf recap: Rams are in fourth after first round of MWC Championship

TUCSON, Ariz.- In the first round of the 2013 Mountain West Conference Men’s Golf Championship, the Rams jumped out to a 296 (+12), good for a spot in fourth place.
Head Coach Christian Newton believes that his team has a strong round on the horizon.
“We played OK today, but made very few putts,” said Coach Newton. “We aren’t really that far away from a great round.”
Junior Parker Edens had himself a very solid round, shooting a 73 (+2) in his first 18 holes and he is currently in a tie for 11th place. Edens averaged an even par on par-3 holes, as well as leading the field with 16 pars.
“I’m pleased with the I scored as I managed it well,” said Edens. “I just need to get some putts to drop tomorrow.
Edens also believes that his teammates and himself are due for a big round.
“We just need to stay focused on our process and game plan and it’ll all work out the way we want,” Edens explained. “Patience, and the putts will drop.”
Sophomore Cameron Harrell also shot a 73 (+2), and sits in 11th place as well. Harrell had three birdies on the day to go with 11 pars. Senior Kirby Pettitt carded a 75 (+4) in his first round with a total of 14 pars.
The other senior Kory Harrell had himself a 75 (+4) as well and is placed in 21st along with Pettitt, while Harrell had 14 pars on the day,
Participating in his first Mountain West Championship, freshman Dominic Kieffer recorded a 77 (+6) in his first 18 holes. Kieffer is currently tied for 32nd.
6 New Mexico paced the entire first round, as their 282 (-2) has them atop the leaderboard after day one. 6 New Mexico is followed by 35 UNLV (287), 52 San Diego State (288), 74 Colorado State (296), 118 Air Force (299), 174 Wyoming (299), 178 Boise State (300), 71 Fresno State (301) and 125 Nevada (314).
