Penner Tied For First At MW Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golf senior Kevin Penner shot 1-over 72 on Saturday and is in a three-way tie for the individual lead at 3-under 139 at the 2013 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National Resort (par 71, 7,144 yards).

After shooting a first-round 4-under 67 on Friday, Penner opened his second round with bogeys on the first and second holes, then birdied No. 6 before recording two more bogeys on No. 7 and No. 9. He birdied No. 10 and No. 12 before recording par on the last six holes.

New Mexico's Gavin Green and San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini are also tied for first place. San Diego State's Tom Berry, Boise State's Taeksoo Kim and San Diego State's Xander Schauffele are all tied for fourth at 2-under, just one shot back. There are a total of 12 golfers at even-par or better.

As a team, the Rebels are in third place at 3-over 571 after a second-round even-par 284. Two-time defending MW Champion San Diego State and No. 6 New Mexico are tied for the team lead at 5-under 563, eight shots ahead of UNLV. San Diego State was 9-under on Saturday, while New Mexico was 3-under.

Air Force is in fourth place at 10-under, followed by Colorado State in fifth at 11-over. Fresno State and Wyoming are both tied for sixth at 24-over, while Boise State is eighth at 30-over and Nevada, Reno is ninth at 47-over.

Other Rebel scores: sophomore Kurt Kitayama is tied for 13th at 2-over 144 after a second-round 2-over 73, sophomore Carl Jonson is 17th at 3-over 145 after a second-round 2-under 69, freshman AJ McInerney is tied for 19th at 5-over 147 after a second-round 3-over 74 and junior Nicholas Maruri is tied for 24th at 7-over 149 after a second-round 1-under 70.

All nine MW schools are represented in the field, which is also made up of 45 individuals. Weather on Saturday was in the low 90s with light winds.
