TUCSON, Ariz.—TCU freshman Julien Brun and senior Johan de Beer will enter the final round of the 2012 Mountain West Championship in a four-way tie for third place, only one shot off the individual lead, following Round 2 competition at OMNI Tucson National Resort.

Brun and de Beer’s efforts have helped TCU grab fourth-place position in the team standings entering Sunday’s final round with an even-par total of 568. The Horned Frogs combined for a 2-over score of 286 Saturday and trail leader San Diego State by 10 strokes (-10).

Brun was TCU’s big mover Saturday, posting a 3-under score of 68 to climb into a share of third place (-4) after entering the round in a tie for fifth. He made up serious ground on the leaderboard during the back-nine, playing it at -4 after posting eagle-birdie results on the first two holes, then capped off the round with another birdie on hole No. 18 to finish the final nine holes with a 32. The Antibes, France, native, one of 10 semifinalists for the Ben Hogan Award presented to the nation’s top collegiate golfer, is looking for his fourth individual victory of the season.

Joining Brun with a good opportunity to claim victory Sunday will be de Beer, who carded an even-par 71 after posting a 67 during Friday’s opening round. The senior from Pretoria, South Africa, totaled three birdies and three bogeys Saturday. He will be looking for his second career win, and his first since his freshman season in the fall of 2008.

Junior Daniel Jennevret matched de Beer’s total Saturday with an even-par 71 of his own to grab a share of 14th place (+1). An eagle-3 on hole No. 8 followed by a birdie on No. 11 had temporarily vaulted Jennevret into a tie for second place midway through the round, but three bogeys in a four-hole stretch of his trip through the back-nine offset the hot stretch.

Freshman Thomas Mantovanini and sophomore Ian Phillips struggled in Round 2, posting respective scores of 76 and 80 to fall into shares of the 27th (+7) and 38th (+11) positions.

Competition from OMNI Tucson National Resort concludes Sunday with the third and final round of the MW Championship. First groups are scheduled to tee off at 7 a.m. PDT.
