Men's golf recap: Brown, Pettitt notch top-5 finishes at MW championship

TUCSON, Ariz. – Colorado State senior Zahkai Brown finished two strokes off the pace set by TCU’s Johan De Beer to finish tied for second after the final round of play at the 2012 Mountain West Championship played on the Catalina Course of the OMNI Tucson National Resort.
Brown, playing from the Rams’ No. 1 slot, carded a final round of 3-under 68 to match three-round score of TCU’s Julien Brun, at 7-under par.
Junior Kirby Pettitt also finished among the conference leaders, tying for fifth with a three-round total of 211 (-2). Pettitt trailed off on Day 3, carding a 2-over 73 after back-to-back rounds of 69 to open the tournament Friday and Saturday.
The Rams, after moving into third place entering the final day of competition, carded a team score of 2-over 286, and finished fifth out of eight programs with a 54-hole total of 853 (+1).
San Diego State took home its second-consecutive championship title, shooting an 844 (-8) to finish nine strokes ahead of the Rams. TCU (849) finished second in the five-team race, followed by New Mexico and UNLV who tied for third with a three-round total of 851, two strokes ahead of CSU.
Boise State (871), Air Force (882) and Wyoming (891) finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectfully, well behind the rest of the field.
The Rams now wait for the NCAA regional tournament selections. The NCAA Men's Golf Committee will select the NCAA Division I men's golf regional participants Monday. Colorado State has competed in the NCAA regionals in 11 of the last 12 seasons, including five straight from 2007-11.
