Rebels Tied For 3rd After 1st Round At NCAA Regional

GREENSBORO, N.C. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 9 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 5-over-par 293 on Thursday and is in a two-way tie for third place at the 2012 NCAA East Regional, which is being played at Grandover Resort's East Course (par 72, 7,271) yards.
Liberty opened play with a 5-under 283 and leads second-place SMU by five shots. The second-seeded Rebels are tied with Tulsa, while Texas Tech rounds out the top five at 6-over. Louisiana-Lafayette and Lamar are both tied for sixth at 7-over, while Auburn is eighth at 8-over, Indiana is ninth at 10-over and Florida is 10th at 11-over.
SMU's Matt Schovee leads all individuals at 5-under 67, while SMU's Harry Higgs and Tulsa's John Young Kim are both tied for second at 3-under.
UNLV sophomore Blake Biddle leads all Rebel players and is in a five-way tie for fourth place, three shots off the lead at 2-under 70. He had five birdies and three bogeys on the day.
Other Rebel players: freshman Carl Jonson is tied for 15th at 1-over 73, senior Derek Ernst and junior Kevin Penner are both tied for 31st at 3-over 75, while freshman Kurt Kitayama is 73rd at 10-over 82.
There are a total of six 54-hole regional tournaments and the NCAA East Regional consists of 14 teams and 75 individuals. The low five teams and low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship finals, which will be played at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., May 29 - June 3.
This year marks UNLV's 24th straight appearance in a NCAA Regional, which is the NCAA record for most consecutive appearances. The tournament will continue with 18 holes on Friday and conclude with another 18 holes on Saturday. UNLV is slated to begin the second round off the No. 1 hole with tee times scheduled every 10 minutes from 8:25-9:05 a.m. ET.
