Frogs Open Play at NCAA Men's Golf Championship

May 29, 2012

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.—TCU opened competition at the 2012 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship on Tuesday with the first round of play at The Riviera Country Club. Freshman Julien Brun leads the Horned Frogs on the individual leaderboard, five strokes off the lead.
TCU finished the opening round in a tie for 24th place in the 30-team field after combining for a 15-over-par total of 299. The course played very tough on Day 1, as no teams finished below par. Alabama tops the field at +1.
Brun carded a 1-over 72 to finish the opening round in a 19-way tie for 27th place. Only three higher-ranked golfers finished the day ahead of the Frogs’ 11th-rated freshman. Brun totaled four birdies on the day to help offset five bogeys. UCLA’s Anton Arboleda (-4), who sits atop the individual leaderboard following Day 1 action, was one of only 12 golfers who finished the round in red figures.
Senior Johan de Beer and sophomore Ian Phillips followed Brun in the individual standings in a tie for 81st place, as both fired 4-over scores of 75. Phillips’ score marked his best total since the final round of the Mountain West Championship back on May 6 in Tucson, Ariz.
Junior Daniel Jennevret rounded out the TCU scoring, finishing in a tie for 122nd place with a 6-over 77. Freshman Thomas Mantovanini is one stroke back of Jennevret in a tie for 130th (+7).
TCU is making its 16th all-time appearance at the NCAA Championship and its 13th in head coach Bill Montigel’s 24-year tenure. The Frogs are one of only 15 teams in the field to advance to the national championship at least three times in the last four years.
