Brun Paces Frogs at NCAA Championship

May 30, 2012

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.--TCU held its position in the team standings during Wednesday's second round of the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at The Riviera Country Club. Freshman Julien Brun continues to top all Horned Frogs on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 16th place.
TCU posted a 15-over 299 for the second straight round while finishing Day 2 in a three-way tie for 23rd place at +30. The Frogs, who entered the day in a tie for 24th, will need to make up at least 14 strokes Thursday to move into one of the coveted top-8 positions that qualify for the match play portion of the NCAA Championship. Alabama (+4) currently leads the field by four strokes over second-place UCLA.

Brun rose 11 spots on the individual leaderboard Wednesday after firing a 1-over 72 for the second consecutive day to move his overall total to +2. He was -2 on his round at one point early in the back-nine before suffering four bogeys in a five hole stretch, but he regrouped by birdying the par-5 17th hole to help finish the round on the upswing.

Brun will enter the final round seven strokes behind individual leader Thomas Pieters (-5) of Illinois. Including Pieters (68), only 11 players played Round 2 below par, while only seven currently hold overall scores in red figures. Brun has a good opportunity to make up a large chunk of ground on the leaderboard in the final round, as he is only one shot behind a six-man group tied for 10th place. Only five Frogs have ever recorded a top-10 finish at the NCAA Championship.

Junior Daniel Jennevret posted his best round of the tournament thus far, matching Brun with a 1-over 72 to move up from his starting position of 122nd place into a tie for 69th (+7). Jennevret's total marked his second-best score in five career NCAA Championship rounds.

Joining Brun and Jennevret in comprising TCU's Wednesday total were sophomore Ian Phillips, who shot a 6-over 77, and freshman Thomas Mantovanini, who carded a 7-over 78. Phillips dropped into a tie for 104th place (+10), while Mantovanini is tied for 138th (+14). Senior Johan de Beer struggled in Round 2 while falling into a share of 145th position (+16).
TCU is making its 16th all-time appearance at the NCAA Championship and its 13th in head coach Bill Montigel's 24-year tenure. The Frogs are one of only 15 teams in the field to advance to the national championship at least three times in the last four years.

The 2012 NCAA Men's Golf Championship continues Thursday with the final round of stroke play competition. The top eight teams after 54 holes will advance to the match play competition of the tournament, which will be held Friday through Sunday. Live online video streaming will begin tomorrow on covering holes No. 10, 14 and 18.
