Men golf recap: Mark Simpson Invitational Day 1

Sept. 24, 2012

ERIE, Colo.- After a solid eight under-par finish (568), the Rams currently sit in sole possession of third place after the first two rounds of the Mark Simpson Invitational.
Redshirt Senior Kirby Pettitt carded two solid rounds of play, after posting a 71 (-1) and 67 (-5) in respective rounds.  Pettitt  is currently in a tie for second place overall with a total of 138 (-6) and sits three strokes behind the leader.

Junior Parker Edens sits in a tie for 19th place with teammate Kory Harrell as both Rams finished the day with identical scores in both rounds, shooting a 72 (E) in the first round, while completing the second round with a 70 (-2).

With the wind swirling a bit in the morning round, the Rams as a team were five strokes over par at one point.  However, after an impressive second round, to end the day in third place, and eight strokes under par is quite impressive.  “I’m pleased with our play today.  We were +5 at one time early in the day, so to fight all the way back to be -8 says a lot about our resiliency,”  Head Coach Christian Newton said.  “It will take, and I fully expect a total team effort in order to run down Oregon St. tomorrow.  I know my guys welcome the challenge.”

Freshman Dominic Kieffer, who is competing as an individual, carded a first round score of 76 (+4) , but rebounded to shoot  a 71 (-1) and now is placed in 43rd.  Sophomore Cameron Harrell grouped a pair of 74’s to end his day with a 148 (+4).  Freshman Jordan Wetsch fired a total of 151, with a 79 (+7) first round and an even par 72 in the second round.  The Oregon State Beavers currently sit atop the leaderboard with a team score of 561 (-15), with the Missouri-Kansas City one stroke down (562) and in possession of second place.  Colorado and Kanas both shot 570 (-6) and are tied for fourth.  Texas-Arlington ended play in fifth with 572 team scores, followed by Denver (573) and Northern Colorado (575).  Gonzaga and Air Force tied for ninth shooting a 579, as Texas State (583), Houston Baptist (+8), Utah (+10), and Wyoming (+14) rounded out the action.
