Lobo Men's Golf Team Fourth in Florida
Oct. 21, 2012
In Windermere, Fla., the beauty of the sixth-ranked University of New Mexico men's golf team is that any of its players are capable of recording a strong round and keeping the team in the thick of each tournament.
Seniors Benjamin Bauch and James Erkenbeck each shot even-par 72s to help the Lobos to a fourth- place standing after Sunday's first round of the 15-team Isleworth Collegiate Invitational at the lsleworth Country Club.
UNM's 5-over 293 is nine strokes off the lead held by top-ranked California. No 2 Texas is second at even-par 288, followed by No. 28 Illinois at 3-over.
Bauch and Erkenbeck are tied for seventh among the 75 players in the individual competition, five shots behind leader Michael Kim, who shot an opening-round 67 for the Golden Bears.
"Ben and James both played solid rounds for us," UNM coach Glen Millican said. "The golf course is fairly demanding, and both had similar rounds."
During UNM's last event, a 29-stroke victory at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate from Sept. 28-29, sophomore Gavin Green and senior John Catlin led the team to victory, Green winning the event at 7-under and Catlin finishing third at 4 under.
On Sunday, Green shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 16th while Catlin shot a 6-over 78 and tied for 58th.
"John played good golf; he just struggle to score at the beginning and at the end," Millican said. "It's nice to know that John can struggle and you have other guys in the lineup that can pick it up. Tomorrow, John might be the one to get a low round. All five of our guys are capable of playing well."
That includes sophomore Victor Perez, who is tied for 45th at 4-over 76.
UNM resumes play today in the event that features 13 teams in Golfweek.com/Sagarin's top 50 with a 6:50 Mountain Time tee time.
