No. 11 Rebels Just One Back In N.M.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 11 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 3-under 281 and a second-round 1-over 285 on Monday and is in second place at the 12-team Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, which is being played at New Mexico State University Golf Course (par 71, 7,074 yards).
UNLV has a 36-hole total of 2-under 566 and trails first-place Wichita State by just a stroke heading into Tuesday's final round. Wichita State turned in rounds of 1-under 283 and 2-under 282 to sit at 3-under 565 after the first day of action. Texas State and UTEP are both tied for third at 1-under, while Kansas rounds out the top five at 2-over.
UNLV junior Blake Biddle and Kansas' Chris Gilbert are tied for the individual lead at 6-under 136 after both golfers shot two consecutive rounds of 3-under 68. Rebel senior Kevin Penner is in a three-way tie for third at 3-under after shooting 70-69.
Other Rebel scores: sophomore Carl Jonson is tied for 17th at 1-over 143 (70-73), sophomore Kurt Kitayama, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 34th at 4-over 146 (77-69), freshman Zane Thomas is tied for 41st at 6-over 148 (73-75), and junior Nicholas Maruri is tied for 50th at 7-over 149 (74-75).
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 a.m. MT.
