Dec. 31, 2012
Litchfield Park, Ariz. - Air Force junior Kyle Westmoreland finished in a tie for 42nd place at the second-annual Patriot All-America Invitational on the Gold Course at The Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Ariz. Westmoreland, one of 84 participants in the tournament, posted scores of 73, 75 and 76 for a three-round total of 14-over par 224.
Invitations to The Patriot All-America were based on individuals earning PING All-America honors the previous season in NCAA Divisions I, II and III as well as the NAIA and NJCAA Divisions I and II. Additionally, a member from each of the United States Military Academies were invited as well as GCAA national award recipients, members of the most recent Palmer Teams and AJGA All-Americans and Toyota Junior Golf World Cup participants currently enrolled in their freshman year of college.
In addition to crowning to crown a national champion, the golfers honored fallen heroes from all branches of the military. They carried red, white and blue golf bags with the name, rank and branch of a solider lost in battle. Westmoreland represented Air Force Captain Derek Argel, a 2000 graduate of the Academy who died May 30, 2005 in a plane crash during a training mission in the Diyala province northwest of Baghdad while serving Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Sebastian Cappelen from the University of Arkansas won the tournament with a four-under par 206, defeating UNLV’s Kevin Penner by one stroke.
