Penner Makes 2013 Hogan Award Watch List

LAS VEGAS ( - UNLV senior golfer Kevin Penner has been included on The Ben Hogan Award Watch List, which was announced Wednesday by Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts, in conjunction with Colonial Country Club, The Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The list is comprised of 27 collegiate golfers from 20 universities, including 17 golfers on it for the first time.

The most prestigious award in men's college golf, The Hogan is presented annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the past 12-month period. The Ben Hogan Award Selection Committee represents leaders in amateur and collegiate golf.

In addition to Penner, this year's watch list includes (in alphabetical order): Daniel Berger (Florida State, So.), Julien Brun (TCU, So.), Albin Choi (NC State, Jr.), Corey Conners (Kent State, Jr.), Scott Fernandez (Iowa State, So.), Steven Fox (Chattanooga, Sr.), Ben Geyer (St. Mary's, Sr.), Talor Gooch (Oklahoma State, Jr.), Brandon Hagy (California, Jr.), Max Homa (California, Sr.), Michael Kim (California, So.), Jace Long (Missouri, Sr.), Tyler McCumber (Florida, Sr.), Cheng-Tsung Pan (Washington, So.), Thomas Pieters (Illinois, Jr.), Patrick Rodgers (Stanford, So.), Trevor Simsby (Washington, Jr.), Brandon Stone (Texas, Fr.), Julian Suri (Duke, Sr.), Ben Taylor (Nova Southeastern, Jr.), Justin Thomas (Alabama, So.), T.J. Vogel (Florida, Sr.), Michael Weaver (California, Jr.), Pontus Widegren (UCLA, Sr.), Chris Williams (Washington, Sr.) and Bobby Wyatt (Alabama, Jr.).

Penner, who played in four of UNLV's five tournaments during the fall season, leads the team and the Mountain West in scoring average at 71.09 per round. He has finished in the top 10 individually in all four of his collegiate tournaments this season and his low round was a 67 at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Alabama in October. His best finish of the season was a tie for second at the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational in Atlanta in September.

A list of 10 semifinalists, which could include individuals not on the current list, will be unveiled on April 18, and then will be pared down to three finalists on May 8. The winner will be crowned at a black-tie banquet at Colonial Country Club on May 20, prior to the start of the PGA TOUR's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Former Rebel golfers who have earned the same recognition (named to the Watch List) were: Derek Ernst (2010, 2012), Eddie Olson (2009) and Seung-su Han (2007, 2008). Ryan Moore was the 2005 Hogan Award winner, which marked the first time a UNLV golfer was named the national player of the year. In 2006, UNLV's Andres Gonzales was a semifinalist for the award.
