ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - It is the highest nationally ranked athletic program on the University of New Mexico campus and has several victories against Top-25 opponents to its credit. Name that team.
With apologies to coach Steve Alford and the men's basketball program, the answer we were looking for is the UNM men's golf team.
The Lobos moved up one spot to No. 3 in the latest Golfweek.com/Sagarin poll after winning the Arizona Intercollegiate last week and besting previously unbeaten and No. 1-ranked California in the process.
Golfweek.com named the Lobos its Team of the Week following their 8-under-844 performance in Tucson on Jan. 28-29 for a two-stroke win over TCU. Cal finished third, three strokes off the pace.
UNM has two victories on the season and has come in first or second in each of its last four tournaments.
Senior James Erkenbeck, who finished third at the Arizona Intercollegiate with a 6-under 207, now is ranked 18th in the Golfweek.com individual collegiate rankings. Sophomores Gavin Green (37th) and Victor Perez (46th) also are in the top 50.
The Lobos return to action Feb. 20-22 when it travel to Turle Bay, Hawai'i for the John Burns Intercollegiate.
