MW Names Erkenbeck Men's Golfer of the Week
Feb. 19, 2013
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Even when the University of New Mexico isn't playing a tournament, it's finding ways to win.
On Tuesday, senior James Erkenbeck earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors for his third-place tie individually at the Arizona Intercollegiate, which the fourth-ranked Lobos won as a team.
Erkenbeck carded a 6-under-par 207 (68-71-68) to finish in a three-way tie for third among the 91 golfers competing at The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson, Ariz. on Jan. 28-29. His performance on the par 71, 6,932-yard course led New Mexico to the team title. It was the second straight tournament crown for the Lobos dating back to the fall season.
In the process, UNM handed top-ranked California its first tournament loss this season. The Bears had captured all five of their fall tournaments, finishing once as co-champion.
Erkenbeck's 68 in both the first and third rounds matched a season-low for the senior from San Diego.
The award is the second conference honor for Erkenbeck this season. He earned MW Golfer of the Month recognition in October; the MW has changed the award to a weekly honor, beginning with the spring season.
UNM, which has two wins and two runner-up finishes in its last four events, returns to competition Wednesday-Friday for the 54-hole John Burns Intercollegiate in Kahuku, Hawai'i.
