Rebels To Play In Palm Desert This Weekend

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 12 UNLV men's golf team will be back in action this Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 25-26, at the Fourth Annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The tournament, which is hosted by the University of Wyoming and presented by Cleveland Golf, will be played at the Classic Club (par 72, 7,305 yards) in Palm Desert, Calif.
The Rebels will be competing with the same lineup used in last week's second-place finish at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii: senior Derek Ernst, junior Kevin Penner, sophomore Blake Biddle, and freshmen Carl Jonson and Kurt Kitayama.
The 54-hole tournament this weekend will consist of 36 holes played on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. Both days will begin with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. The 24-team field includes: Arizona, Auburn, Baylor, Cal Poly, Colorado, Denver, Hawaii, Houston, Idaho, Iowa State, Kent State, Nebraska, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, SMU, Southern Utah, Texas A&M, Texas-Arlington, Texas Tech, UC Riverside, UNLV, UTEP and Wyoming.
The Classic Club was named a 2010 "Best Courses You Can Play" by Golfweek and earned 2009 and 2010 "Best Resort Courses of Distinction" by Golfweek. It was also the host site of the PGA's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
This is the second year that UNLV will playing in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The Rebels finished second at last year's event at 20-over, five shots back of team champion Texas A&M. Penner tied for medalist honors at 3-under, while Biddle finished tied for seventh at 4-over and Ernst tied for ninth at 5-over.
UNLV has finished first or second in four of the five tournaments it has competed in this season, including posting three team wins. There will be no live scoring available for the Wyoming Desert Classic, but daily results will be posted on UNLVRebels.com.
