Brun Named MW Co-Golfer of the Month

March 1, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—TCU freshman Julien Brun and UNLV junior Kevin Penner have been selected Mountain West Men’s Golfers of the Month for February. It marks the second time this season the pair has shared the honor after both were recognized in September.

Brun opened the spring season with a pair of top-15 finishes during the month of February. The Amer Ari Invitational, held in Kohala Coast, Hawaii on Feb. 1-3, featured 11 of the nation's top-50 programs and 16 of the nation's top-50 golfers. The freshman posted the best round of his career on the final day of the 54-hole tournament, shooting a 7-under 65 to rally for a tie for 13th place with a final score of 4-under par 212 (77-69-65) on the par 72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings Course.

In his second tournament of the month, Brun posted his second individual victory of the year at the John Hayt Collegiate on Feb. 11-12 at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., carding a 5-under-par 211 (67-71-72) to secure a one-shot victory over senior teammate Johan de Beer. The John Hayt Collegiate Invitational featured nine top-50 teams and 18 of the top-100 individuals in the country. Brun became just the fifth golfer in TCU history, and the first freshman, to earn top medalist honors twice in the same season.

Penner led UNLV in both tournaments during the month of February as the Rebels finished tied for second at the John Burns Intercollegiate and took the team title at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

Penner finished tied for sixth at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii on Feb. 15-17 after shooting a 4-under 212 (67-73-72) on the par-72, 7,218-yard Turtle Bay Course. He captured top medalist honors for the second consecutive year at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Feb 26-27 in Palm Desert, Calif. The individual title is also his second of the season. Penner fired a 7-under 209 (67-69-73) on the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club Course en route to a one-shot victory over Corey Conners of Kent State. UNLV also won the team title.
