Penner Named Co-MW Men's Golfer Of The Month

March 1, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV junior Kevin Penner has been selected as the Co-Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Month for February, the league announced Thursday. Penner shared the honor with TCU freshman Julien Brun. This marks the second time this year the pair has shared the honor as both won the monthly award in September.

Penner led the No. 11 Rebels in both of their tournaments in February. The squad finished in a tie for second out of 18 teams at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii, and then captured the team title at the 24-team Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif. The team's win at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate was its fourth in six events this year and marked the fifth time that they finished first or second at a tournament this season. In three of the four tournaments that UNLV has won this year, it has set a tournament record for low 54-hole score, including at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

Penner recorded his fourth top-10 finish of the year (now has five) and 11th of his career (now has 12) with a tie for sixth (out of 105 individuals) at the Burns Intercollegiate, which was played Feb. 15-17. He finished at 4-under 212, carding a 5-under 67 during the first round.

Penner then earned medalist honors at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate for the second consecutive year. That tournament was played Feb. 25-26. It marked the first time that he finished in first place without a tie and it was his second win of the season and third of his career. Penner won the 120-player event by one stroke at 7-under 209.

For the month, Penner played six rounds, turning in three in the 60s. Two of those rounds were 5-under 67 (both first rounds of each tournament). His scoring average for the month was 70.17.

UNLV will be back in action on March 9-11 as it hosts the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
