THIS WEEK
The Air Force golf team continues its 2012 spring season on Monday, March 5 at the Samford Intercollegiate in Hoover, Ala. The two-day tournament takes place at the par-72, 7,001-yard Hoover Country Club. Two rounds will be played on Monday, withe the final round on Tuesday, March 6. Monday’s play will begin with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start, with Tuesday starting at 8:30 a.m.
 
THE FIELD
Eighteen teams are slated to compete in this week’s tournament. They are: Air Force, Austin Peay, Belmont, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Houston Baptist, Illinois State, Murray State, Nicholls State, Samford, Sam Houston State, SIU-Edwardsville, Southern Illinois, Tennessee-Martin, Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina and Winthrop. Making the trip for Air Force will be Kyle Westmoreland, Blake Edwards, Philip Colwell, Miguel Macias and Caleb Leestma.
 
AIR FORCE HEAD COACH George Koury
Air Force head coach George Koury is in his 10th season at the helm of the Falcons’ golf program. After serving three seasons as an assistant under legendary coach Gene Miranda, Koury took over the program at the start of the 2002-03 season.
Koury, a 1993 Academy graduate and former team captain and MVP, has helped the Falcons continue their dominance at the Service Academy Golf Classic, winning 15 straight titles at the event. In addition, he led Air Force to the team title at the 2005 Falcon Invitational, marking the first time since the inaugural event in 1969 that the team won its own tournament outright.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Sophomore Kyle Westmoreland posted his third top 10 finish this season and fourth of his career and the Air Force men’s golf team finished in 14th place at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas. Westmoreland finished in a tie for seventh place after shooting a one-over par 73 on Tuesday. He completed the tournament with a career-best two-under par total of 214. Freshman Blake Edwards, playing in his first varsity tournament, finished in a tie for 32nd place with a total of 222.
 
EISENHOWER BLUE COURSE NAMED ONE OF THE BEST
In its recent list of the Best Campus Courses, Golfweek has recognized the Eisenhower Golf Club - Blue Course as one of the best in the nation. The Falcons’ home course checks in at No. 21 on the list and is one of just two Mountain West home courses to be recognized (New Mexico’s is at No. 13).
