FRESNO, Calif. --The Fresno State men's golf team heads to Oregon to compete in the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon Dunes, Oreg. on March 8-10.
Less than 24 hours after the final hole of the Fresno State Lexus Classic, the 'Dogs were on the road for their next tournament. Fresno State is competing in the Gonzaga hosted tournament at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
"It is always fun when going into competition, but it is extra exciting to be playing a tournament at Bandon Dunes. This golf course is rated one of the best in the world," head coach Mike Watney said.
According to GolfWeek.com, the Bulldogs are now ranked 82th nationally, following their six-under par, second place finish at the Lexus Classic.
The Bulldog lineup includes, Rufie Fessler, Nate Jessup, Troix Tonkham, Johnny Partridge and Rich Gilkey. Tonkham had an impressive comeback on the last nine holes of the Lexus Classic, which helped secure the 'Dogs in their second place finish. Partridge also contributed to the Bulldogs top two win by making 13 birdies throughout the tournament.
"The key is our success in the Lexus Classic was that Troix, Johnny, and Rich all played well, in addition to our regular stalwarts like Rufie and Nate," Watney said. "Each guy in the lineup made major contributions."
Among the 18-team field at the Bandon Dunes Championship are top 20 ranked Washington, UCLA and SMU.
The Bulldogs will compete on the fourth course link of the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, the Old McDonald course, where the Pacific Ocean meets the shoreline of Southern Oregon.
