TCU Travels to San Diego for Barona Collegiate Cup

March 21, 2012

FORT WORTH — The TCU men's golf team continues its spring season this week when it plays in the Barona Collegiate Cup at Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif. The Horned Frogs will be among of group of eight top-50 squads in the 16-team field Thursday through Friday.

Barona Creek Golf Club is a par-72, 7,088-yard course located outside of San Diego. The tournament will feature 54 holes of play Thursday through Friday with two 18-hole rounds on the opening day. Unlike most tournaments in which the Frogs, the Barona Collegiate Cup will feature six-man lineups for each team with only the low five scores in each round counting toward a squad’s overall total instead of the typical five-man, count-four setup.

TCU, which has climbed to No. 35 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin national ratings, finds itself matched up against another quality field this week. Other top-50 ranked squads competing include USC (No. 6), Georgia Tech (No. 8), San Diego State (No. 14), Kent State (No. 23), St. Mary’s (No. 37), Illinois (No. 38) and North Texas (No. 39). Rounding out the field will be Arizona, Northwestern, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Pacific, Hawaii, Central Connecticut and Utah.

Comprising the TCU lineup will be freshman Julien Brun, senior Johan de Beer, junior Daniel Jennevret sophomore Ian Phillips and Johnny Antle and freshman Thomas Mantovanini.

The Frogs have experienced a solid start to their spring season, placing in the top-third of the team leaderboard in three of four events. The squad most recently recorded a third-place finish last week at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas.

Senior Johan de Beer has been TCU’s individual leader in both of its last two tournaments, earning top-15 finishes in Austin (10th) and two weeks ago in Las Vegas, Nev., at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters (15th). De Beer’s recent success has vaulted him into a position among the nation’s top-100 golfers according to the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, giving the Frogs three individuals in the group. Brun leads TCU’s contingent in the rankings at No. 14, while de Beer is No. 95 and Jennevret is No. 96.

Following this weekend’s tournament, TCU wraps up competition for the month of March the following weekend at the Insperity ASU Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
