No. 2 Rebels To Play In Tempe This Week

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 2 UNLV men's golf team will travel to Tempe, Ariz., for the 40th annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational, which will be played at Karsten Golf Course (par 71, 7,026 yards) on Friday-Saturday, April 6-7.

The 17-school tournament will consist of 36 holes played on Friday and a final round of 18 holes taking place on Saturday. This year's field is made up of Arizona, host Arizona State, Ball State, BYU, California, Cal State Northridge, Colorado State, Denver, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pepperdine, San Diego State, UC Irvine, UNLV, UTSA, Washington and Wyoming.

The Rebels' lineup includes senior Derek Ernst, junior Kevin Penner, sophomore Blake Biddle and freshmen Carl Jonson and Kurt Kitayama.

UNLV finished third (out of 12 teams) at last year's Thunderbird Invitational at 5-over 857, with Ernst leading the way in a tie for 12th at even-par 213. Biddle and Penner both tied for 16th at 2-over. USC won the team title by 14 shots at 15-under, while San Diego State's J.J. Spaun earned medalist honors by a shot at 7-under.

In its last tournament, UNLV finished one shot back at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz., on March 17. It was UNLV's seventh tournament finishing either first or second this season (in eight total events). The Rebels have won five team titles this year and have two second-place finishes.
