April 5, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior J.J. Spaun has been selected Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Month for March after capturing individual honors at three of four tournaments. This is Spaun's fourth career golfer of the month award and first this season.
Spaun began the month helping San Diego State capture the team title by eight strokes over Saint Mary's College at The Farms Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., on March 12-13. He earned medalist honors by defeating 76 other golfers and posting three straight rounds at or below par (72-72-68). Spaun finished with a 4-under-par 212 on the par 72, 6,911-yard course and overcame a five-stroke deficit heading into the final 18 holes to move from fourth place into first. He also was one of only four golfers to end the 54-hole tournament under par. Spaun's final round 68 tied as the low round of the tournament.
Four days later at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz., Spaun led San Diego State to another team title, by one stroke over UNLV, and captured the individual crown with a four-stroke victory over BYU's Zach Blair. His 15-under 201 (67-66-68) on the par 72, 7,219-yard course was a season-low. Spaun was the only individual in the 75-golfer field to card three consecutive sub-70 rounds. His 54 holes included 15 birdies, two eagles and four bogeys. Spaun's second-round 66 was bogey-free and is his low round of the season.
At the Barona Collegiate Cup on March 22-23, the senior from San Dimas, Calif., earned medalist honors for the third time in 11 days, and helped the SDSU win its fourth consecutive team title. Spaun rallied the Aztecs from a deficit heading into the final holes, carding three birdies in a four-hole span, to propel them to a two-shot victory over USC. Spaun fired a 14-under 202 (67-67-68) on the par 72, 7,088-yard course in Lakeside, Calif., and won the title by three strokes over five players all tied at 11-under 205. His posted three consecutive sub-70 rounds, including 17 birdies and only three bogeys in the 54 holes.
In the final tournament of the month, Spaun collected his 11th consecutive round at or below par with an opening-round 70 at the Stanford Intercollegiate held March 30 - April 1. He finished the tournament in 46th place out of 90 golfers after posting a 13-over 223 (70-76-77) on the par 70, 6,742-yard Stanford course.
Spaun's three individual titles in 2012 are the most by an Aztec golfer in a single calendar year since Kevin Riley won three in 1990. Spaun currently has five college titles in his career.
