Mountain West Announces Men's Golfer of the Month

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico freshman Victor Perez has been selected Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Month for April. This is the first golfer of the month award of Perez's career.
Perez began the month tying for 16th individually at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational (April 6 and 7). On the par 71, 7,026-yard Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz., the freshman shot two rounds under par en route to a 54-hole total of 2-under 211 (74-70-67). His final round of 4-under 67 helped New Mexico make up eight strokes on Mountain West rival San Diego State. The Lobos finished with a combined score of 9-under 843 (289-276-278) to tie for second with the Aztecs.
At The Aggie Invitational on April 21 and 22, Perez paced the field of 70 golfers by four strokes, carding carded a 3-under 213 (73-71-69) on the par 72, 7,146-yard Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. He began the final round of the tournament in a tie for second place, one stroke behind Oregon's Daniel Miernicki, but recorded five birdies in the last 18 holes to vault into first place ahead of eight top 50 golfers. The individual title is the first of Perez's career. As a team, New Mexico finished sixth in the final standings at 68-over 1,148.
In 33 rounds played this season, Perez has recorded 14 rounds at par or better. The freshman ranks 11th in the Mountain West with a stroke average of 72.28.
