Lobos' Perez Now an Award-Winning Golfer
April 30, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The Mountain West on Monday named University of New Mexico freshman Victor Perez as its Men's Golfer of the Month for April.
Perez won his first collegiate tournament, the Texas A&M-hosted Aggie Invitational, on April 21-22 in Bryan Texas. He was the only player under par at 3-under 213, won the event by four strokes and beat eight players ranked among Golfweek.com's top 50 collegiate players. The group included Texas' Dylan Frittelli, No. 2 in the nation.
Perez, a native of Semeac, France, also finished 16th out of 95 golfers at Arizona State's ASU Thunderbird Invitational on April 6-7 in Tempe, Ariz. His 2-under 211 included a final-round 67 that helped the 16th-ranked Lobos make up eight strokes on conference rival and No. 15 San Diego State for a second-place tie in the team standings in Tempe. No. 1 Texas won that event by eight strokes.
Perez has finished in the top 20 in each of UNM's last six tournaments. He has eight top-20 finishes in 12 tournaments overall in 2011-12. Perez ranks No. 11 in the MW with a stroke average of 72.28.
Perez and the Lobos will compete in the Mountain West tournament in Tucson, Ariz., from Friday-Sunday. UNM is seeking its first conference title since 2006.
