The Air Force golf team opens play at the 2013 Mountain West Championships on Friday, May 3 in Tucson, Ariz. The three-day tournament takes place at the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National. Each day, 18 holes will be played beginning at 7 a.m. (PT).
All nine MW teams are slated to compete in the 54-hole championship. They are: Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, New Mexico, Nevada, UNLV, San Diego State and Wyoming. Comprising the five-man team for Air Force will be junior Kyle Westmoreland, senior Andrew Hoops, junior Philip Colwell, junior Jack Howard and sophomore Blake Edwards.
LAST YEAR AT THE MW CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Air Force golf team fired a final round team score of 292 (+8) and finished in seventh place at the 2012 Mountain West Championships. The Falcons, who improved each day at the tournament, posted a three-round total of 882, nine strokes ahead of the University of Wyoming.
Individually, Andrew Hoops led the Falcons with a three-round total of eight-over par 221 after shooting a team-best even-par 71on Sunday. Hoops tied for 24th overall. Kyle Westmoreland followed in a tie for 28th place with a total of 223 after a 74 in the final round.
LAST TIME OUT
The Falcons finished in second place last weekend at the PING Cougar Classic, hosted by Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. The Falcons shot a six-under par 282 in the final round Saturday for a three-round total of 15-under par 849 on the par-72, 7,142-yard Riverside Golf Club. Host BYU won the tournament at 32-under par.
Junior Kyle Westmoreland tied for second individually with a 13-under par total of 203 after a four-under par 68 in the final round. He tied with Joe Parkinson of BYU, one shot behind tournament winner Zachary Blair of BYU. Westmoreland's 54-hole total is the second-lowest of his career and the fourth-lowest by any Falcon golfer in the history of the program. He was one of only two golfers in the field of 52 to shoot three sub-70 rounds and one of four golfers to complete each round under par. Westmoreland notched 18 birdies, including seven in each of the final two rounds.
Senior Andrew Hoops shot a 68 in the final round Saturday and finished in a tie for fifth place with a three-round total of five-under par 211. Sophomore Blake Edwards tied for 16th place at one-under par 217, while junior Philip Colwell tied for 17th with a two-over par total of 218. Fellow junior Jack Howard had to withdraw during the first round due to a stomach virus.
WESTMORELAND NAMED MTN. WEST GOLFER OF THE WEEK
For his efforts at the Cougar Classic, Kyle Westmoreland was selected the Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Week.
Westmoreland enters this week's MW Championships leading the Falcons and ranked second in the Mountain West with a 71.90 stroke average over 31 rounds. This marks his third career MW Golfer of the Week award.
