Lobos Golf Men Have Georgia on Their Minds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The 16th-ranked University of New Mexico men’s golf team is headed to Athens, Ga., for the May 17-19 NCAA Regionals, the team learned Monday night.
The Lobos are one of 13 teams in the regional, in which the top five finishers will advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Georgia Bulldogs, the No. 25 team in the latest Golfweek.com/Sagarain rankings, will play host to the event, which also includes No. 2 Alabama and 12th-ranked North Florida.
Two-time defending national champion Augusta State also will play in the field, along with Iowa, East Carolina, Long Beach State, Wake Forest, Houston, Texas-Arlington, North Carolina-Wilmington and Loyola (Md.).
The Lobos own a 6-3 record against the rest of the teams in the regional.
UNM finished fourth to champion North Florida at the General Hackler Invitational in Pawleys Island, S.C., on March 11-12. The Lobos were seven strokes off the pace. East Carolina was second , two strokes behind North Florida. Augusta State also was in that event, finishing 10 strokes behind New Mexico to earn sixth place.
The Lobos finished 39 strokes ahead of Texas-Arlington at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, from March 16-17, and 22 strokes ahead at the Lone Star Invitational in October – a tournament UNM won.
New Mexico finished 10 strokes ahead of Houston and 11 strokes ahead of Iowa but four strokes behind Augusta State at the Royal Oaks Invitational from Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
UNM was four strokes better than Iowa at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa from Sept. 25-27.
